“Being at the Susan B. Anthony Center saved my life and my relationship with my children. The groups, the AA/NA meetings, my one-on-one weekly sessions with my therapist, and the support of all of the women and staff here have really helped me in ways I could never have imagined. I have learned to develop friendships, living skills, to express my feelings in a healthy manner, and best of all, how to be a mother to my children. If it was not for the Susan B. Anthony Center, I do not know where I would be in my life, or my children’s lives. This place has truly given me a life that I could never imagine.” Jen D.
“Susan B. gave me the chance to regain custody of my young boys, allowed me to enroll in school and provided me with a good start on a new future.“ -T.W.
“My name is Sandy and I am a recovering addict. Why Susan B? When I was using drugs, I put three children up for adoption. I had stopped using for several months when I found out I was pregnant again. I didn’t know what to do, how to be a mom, manage life and raise a kid on my own. I looked for help and called the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center. My daughter was born and I used every excuse in the book not to go into the program. I was scared, but I knew I needed to go. Susan B. gave me a chance to grow into a different woman... a mother. Where am I now? I am in the Master’s program in Counseling at Nova Southeastern University and was chosen to receive the Fort Lauderdale Women’s Council Scholarship of the Year award.”
Children’s Success Stories:
G.H. is a 2 year old girl who was ‘acting out’ in school and almost removed from her class for the 3rd time. Receiving individual and family therapy, she has made significant progress improving her verbal and social skills. She is now able to listen and follow directions and is reported to be one of the most well-behaved children in her class.
B.T. would not allow her mother to display affection by any type of touching (i.e. giving hugs) prior to developmental intervention/parenting and therapy. Now B.T. is comfortable with physical affection and looks forward to giving and receiving massages to/from her mother nightly.
J.B. had a poor relationship with his mother upon entering SBA, there was no bonding or play between them. After treatment, J.B. and his mother
have a healthy relationship filled with positive interaction and communication. J.B. has increased his feelings vocabulary and is able to express himself appropriately.
J.W. had difficulty leaving her mother and going to a childcare facility for the first time. She experienced anxiety and became visibly upset frequently. With therapy, she is making progress increasing her verbal, social, and coping skills. She appears to be able to leave her mother’s side for long periods of time and she is smiling and laughing often.
B.V. appeared to become angry and aggressive when she did not have her mother’s attention, when adults would speak to her mother, and when her mother would play with other children. With therapy, B.V. is making significant progress. She is learning to respect adults and her mother and express herself by using words, not negative behavior. She has become more accepting and is able to see her mother play with other children.
